226 Vintage Stands for Performance

Pipe Installation

Disclaimer

This installation will require you to drill and you may need to modify your plastic crank case cover. Pipe installation, and all other scooter tuning, is recommended for scooter enthusiasts who are comfortable with performing maintenance on their own scooters. If you are not, please take your pipe to a scooter shop for installation.

Since this is a high-performance pipe, you will likely need to rejet your carburetor. Our tests with a stock P200 pipe found us changing the jetting from 116 to 128. Your needed adjustments will vary. In addition, you will likely need to adjust your timing. Your individual scooter's adjustment will vary.

Please e-mail us at info@226vintage.com with any observations or questions you may have. We take all suggestions seriously and will post any relevant notes back to this site to assist or enlighten future customers.

Step One:

Preparing Your New Header

Use the dollop of grease provided to line the inside of your header. You should apply it to the inner lining and the o-ring. This will ensure a smooth fit.

Step Two:

Removing Your Shock Bolt

It is highly recommended that you use a shock bolt that is a 1/4" (6mm) longer than the one that comes stock on your scoot. The reasoning is that you really need a lock washer or Loctite® 271TM Threadlocker to ensure that your shock bolt stays put.

Step Three:

Drilling The Header Spring Holes

Remember: it's important to have both springs as plumb as possible when you're done. That said, this is the outside spring hole. IMPORTANT When drilling, leave at least a quarter inch of material. Don't drill too close to the edge or the tension in the pipe springs will likely crack the cylinder fin it's attached to.

Step Four:

Drilling the Header Spring Holes

This is the inside spring hole. IMPORTANT When drilling, leave at least a quarter inch of material. Don't drill too close to the edge or the tension in the pipe springs will likely crack the cylinder fin it's attached to.

Step Five:

Hanging the Springs

Here is Paolo hanging the springs. Make sure your face looks like his when you do it. Both springs should be hanging the same way when you're done. Remember: it's important to have the springs as plumb as possible when you're done.

Step Six:

Partially Deflate Your Back Tire

If this step seems hard, you should stop immediately and bring your scooter to a shop. Otherwise, take it down to the point where you can pinch the tire inward about a half inch. If you succeed, this is a good time to stop and have a refreshment with your mates.

Step Seven:

Mount The Pipe, Header First

IMPORTANT When installing the pipe, if you need to adjust the header in order to better fit the pipe to your bike, you should release the springs and rotate the header. DO NOT remove the header from the rest of the pipe. The O-Ring fit is an excellent seal and would be extremely hard to replace if the header was detached. Just don't do it.

Step Eight:

Attach the Shock Bracket

Make sure when you attach the shock bracket that you are using a bolt that is 1/4" longer than normal. This is so you can use a lock washer to keep the bolt from slipping. Loctite® 271TM Threadlocker will also work to keep the bolt in place.

Step Nine:

Attach The Left-Side Bracket

Here's where the tire pinch comes in handy. Pinch and push the bolt into place. Then screw it in. Should look like the bottom photo when you're done.

Step Ten:

Attach The Washer and Nut

Place the washer, then the nut on the other side of the bolt and tighten.

Step Eleven:

Check Your Install

At this point, the pipe should fit as shown. If so, you should attach the header springs to the pipe.

Step Twelve:

Check Your Shock Bolt

We can't stress enough the need to ensure that your shock bolt is secure. We highly recommend a longer bolt like our Black BoltTM, or the liberal use of Loctite® 271TM Threadlocker to keep that nut securely fastened to the bolt. Double-check all of your nuts to make sure they are secure and then go for a spin!
